Andrew Gutman was on the score-sheet as Charlotte Independence beat Birmingham Legion 4-1 in the first match following the sacking of Jim McGuinness.

The former Celtic coach was responsible for taking the defender on loan to the USL Championship side after he signed for the Scottish champions towards the end of the January transfer window. Gutman has now scored three goals in 14 appearances.

The win lifted Charlotte off bottom place in the division but the two clubs below have played a game less.

McGuinness was handed a three year contract when he took over in December but after six months in the job he was dismissed with a record of 1 win, 6 draws and 7 defeats to start the season.

Mark Hill joined Charlotte on loan in February but had to settle for a place on the bench yesterday, so far he has started four matches and made three appearances as a substitute.

Next weekend Charlotte are away to fifth placed Louisville City.
