Celtic fans have had their worst nightmare confirmed with the launch of a grey and pink third kit.
The latest offering from New Balance was greeted with dismay when it was leaked online a few weeks ago but the real McCoy has prompted some horrendous reactions and x-rated comments from fans.
Neither of the two kits released so far this summer have been welcomed with the home kit appearing to have a missing green hoop.
While the traditional kit is sacrosanct to many fans there is some licence given to second and third kits but the latest, and probably final release from New Balance appears to be the least popular ever.
Announcing the five year New Balance deal in 2015 Peter Lawwell told the Celtic website: “I’m absolutely delighted to announce that New Balance will be our new kit sponsor and partner. Everyone at the club is thrilled about it.
“This is a fantastic global brand that will sit along perfectly with Celtic. It will be our biggest kit sponsorship deal ever, and we believe it’s the biggest in Scottish football history. We’re bound by commercial terms of the values but safe to say, it’s a multi-million pound deal over five years
“It’s a fantastic achievement and I would like to thank Adrian Filby and our commercial team who have worked tirelessly to bring this together. We had a very good partner in Nike for the last 10 years and I would like to take the opportunity to thank them.”
About the only good news is that in the coming season the strip is only likely to be viewed away to Kilmarnock or Hibs but with the commercial department and New Balance driven by sales the kit could make some additional appearances.
It’s unlikely that Lawwell will be wearing the new third kit when he makes an appearance at the Celtic Festival tomorrow.
