The journalist that first broke the news of Celtic’s interest in Boli Mbombo reigned in some of the momentum that the Rapid Vienna man had agreed to join Neil Lennon’s side.

Last night Celtic social media accounts were buzzing with news that a £3m deal had been agreed for the left-back with that position on the park viewed cautiously by Celtic supporters.

The £7m signing of Chistopher Jullien marked something of a sea change in Celtic’s transfer activity but it does seem a stretch too far to expect the club to splash out £3m on a back-up for Kieran Tierney.

Celtic’s first choice left-back has been beset by injury problems throughout the year but there aren’t many fans prepared to accept a £25m move to Arsenal.

Over the last 10 days there has been intense speculation linking Tierney with a move to England, fuelled over the weekend by his early return from Celtic’s training camp in Austria.

No Austrian or Belgian source has picked up on the Mbombo story but every possible angle will be monitored today as transfer interest goes into a frenzy with the deadline for signings to play against Sarajevo coming at 11pm on Thursday.

The 24-year-old has completed two seasons at Rapid and is under contract until June 2021.

Neil Lennon is likely to be quizzed about Celtic’s interest in Mbombo after tonight’s match with St Gallen.
