Leigh Griffiths has admitted that he was close to tears as his free-kick against Nomme Kalju hit that back of the net.

Since his last goal against Hamilton Accies in November the striker has been through every emotion and read every rumour about his lifestyle as thousands celebrated with a chant about him never playing football again.

Griffiths returned to Lennoxtown for training towards the end of March but never played any football as his life stabilised built around long sessions in the gym.

Although he had scored over 100 goals for Celtic he is most famous for scoring two free kicks against England in June 2017 with last night’s strike a carbon copy of one of the Hampden goals that sent Joe Hart’s career into a tailspin.

After Celtic’s 5-0 win over the Estonian champions he told The Sun:

I think you could tell how much I enjoyed it by my reaction. Words can’t actually describe how good a feeling it was when the ball hit the back of the net.

My kids were watching back home and I had friends in the stand. I was close to crying, I’m not going to lie. It was up there with the England moments, if I am honest – right at the very top.

I had a good feeling when it left my foot and Bainy said he was looking from behind and that it was in as soon as it went over the wall. A lot of things went through my mind. So much hard work has been put in, not just by me but the back-room staff and everyone connected with myself.

People have worked so hard with me to get me back on the pitch and I can’t score goals without my team. That’s was a bit of payback for all that and it’s just the start. That’s me up and running for the season and hopefully there is a lot more to come.

Goals from Kris Ajer, Callum McGregor and a double from Ryan Christie gave Celtic a 5-0 lead to take to Estonia on Tuesday as they wait to discover if Maccabi Tel Aviv can overturn a 1-0 defeat to Cluj when the teams meet in Israel.
