Leigh Griffiths has thanked Celtic fans for the reception he got on his return to competitive action.

Ahead of Celtic’s Europa League qualifier against RB Salzburg in December Brendan Rodgers announced that the striker would be taking time out from football to deal with other issues.

Celtic soldiered on largely reliant on Odsonne Edouard to get the goals that eventually steered the club to the Treble Treble.

Griffiths returned to Lennoxtown for training towards the end of March but was confined to the gym and general fitness work as the season came to an and.

The striker scored in friendly wins over Pinkafeld and SC Wierner in pre-season friendlies but the big moment arrived last Wednesday when he made his competitive return with a 15 minute run out against FK Sarajevo.

What a feeling, walking back out on to the pitch after a difficult spell off. Great to be back on amongst it again and the reception I got was incredible. Someone said to me “after the darkness, there will be light” they promised me It! I didn’t believe them, but that person was right. Thank you everyone for the support, from @caitlynmelville to my family, very close friends, @celticfc and my team mates.????

Neil Lennon will monitor Griffiths’ fitness and well being closely as he integrates him fully back into the Celtic side as the hoops set out to retain all three domestic trophies and reach the group phase of the Champions League.
