On Saturday night it seemed like a done deal. Led by Sky Sports almost every other news outlet explained how Kieran Tierney was on his way from Celtic to Arsenal in a record deal for a Scottish club.

This morning there seems to be a distinct change in attitude.

During Sunday what had appeared to be a done deal didn’t make any progress. Although clearly a media leader the phrase ‘Sky sources understand’ was being openly questioned.

The mindset of Tierney has been guessed at and speculated on. His current Celtic deal has four more years to run and is already life changing.

He is set up for life with mortgage worries over for his parents and has shown no sign of agitating for a move or the ‘glamour’ of London life. He prefers to go on holiday to Tenerife with pals rather than go on a selfie tour of Dubai.

An extra £30,000 a week in his bank account may not compensate for being uprooted from the pals and the environment that he grew up in. Sitting in a dressing room full of foreign players jealous of the £350,000 a week wages that Mesut Ozil is collecting might not seem as much of a laugh as sharing banter with Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths.

If the bids were coming from Spurs, Manchester City or Liverpool the temptations would be more obvious than walking in on a club where a group of concerned supporters have gone public as their team drifts further away from honours.

Reflecting on the situation this morning the Daily Record reports:

The deal was potentially worth £25m but the Celtic hierarchy were unhappy with the way it was structured and the fact it included a number of add-ons. Celtic would want the bulk of any potential transfer fee paid upfront, with the add-ons guaranteed and with a sell-on clause before they would even consider sanctioning a deal for one of their prized assets.

Tierney is watching developments with interest but Record Sport understands the defender has not asked for a move or indicated that he is anything other than happy at Celtic. The Scotland star will consider a move only if the club come to him and say they are willing to let him go.

The EPL transfer window closes at 5pm on August 8, all the signs point to Arsenal missing out on Tierney who will still be in the process of recovering from his long running pelvic injury.
