AIK fans cause havoc in Glasgow and try to storm Celtic fans

AIK fans tried to storm through a police barrier to get at Celtic fans tonight.

Police and stewards were at full stretch to keep the peace with the Swedish fans bringing a menacing threat to the city from mid afternoon onwards.

Videos appeared across social media showing AIK fans with a strong police presence escorting them from the city centre through Brigton along London Road into the stadium.

AIK fans have been in bother recently with the Swedish police and UEFA as the Daily Record reported on 15 August:

AIK are strong favourites to qualify having won the first leg 2-1 away from home seven days ago, but will not have the backing of their faithful from a usual area. The Northern Stand is being closed to their fans after a dispute with police chiefs resulted in the club advising their punters to buy briefs for other sections of their 50,000-capacity Friends Arena.

However, AIK are also under investigation by UEFA for a separate situation after serious trouble marred their Champions League qualifier against Maribor last month. Angry Stockholm supporters caused bother after the goal which put them out of the competition when visiting fans grabbed an AIK flag and crushed it sparking an attempt by home fans to get into the visiting section to confront them.

Fortunately for Celtic there was little threat from the AIK players on the park as Celtic racked up a 2-0 first leg lead.

Second half goals from James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard gave Celtic the advantage over physical opponents who looked limited in the attacking third of the park.

Forrest opened the scoring two minutes into the second half with a fierce drive that the keeper got a hand to but was unable to keep out the net while Edouard stepped up to convert with a brilliantly executed free kick.

Around 800 Celtic fans are expected to travel to Stockholm for the return leg but they could be joined by over 100 Swedish based Celtic fans.
