Despite suggestions at the end of last week that Celtic were close to completing the transfer of Birger Meling the story appears to have gone cold.

The fair-haired left-back has impressed in Celtic’s regular European matches against the Norwegian champions prompting suggestions that he could be the replacement for Kieran Tierney.

Celtic’s Champions League KO from Cluj has increased anxiety about the need to bring in new players but at the same time Rosenborg were making their way into a Play Off against Croatia Zagreb.

With those matches looming over the next 10 days Rosenborg aren’t prepared to consider weakening their team even though Meling’s contract expires in December 2020.

The Daily Record reports:

Left-back Birger Meling is in the same position at Rosenborg. The 24-year-old Norway international dodged media attempting to ask him questions about his future following his side’s weekend draw with Odd. However, sources close to the player last night claimed there have been no discussions at this stage.

Celtic have their own European considerations this week with AIK visiting on Thursday in a Europa League Play Off.

With two weeks left in the transfer window it looks like any transfer activity from the hoops will only take place after the return leg against AIK once their European fate is known.
