On the eve of the domestic season Steven Gerrard is desperately trying to whip up interest in his players.

Last summer Josh Windass was shipped out to Wigan Athletic for £2m but so far there has been no interest in any of his star players.

Despite reaching the group phase of the Europa League last season’s spending spree and a wage bill that now covers Gerrard’s management team, Jermain Defoe, Steve Davis and another dozen top team stars is likely to see another loss in the region of £10m.

Selling Alfredo Morelos or James Tavernier would go some way towards covering that loss but failure to reach the group phase of the Europa League or a £10m bill from Sports Direct could threaten the very future of the company.

With less than a week to go before the English transfer window closes the Ibrox club won’t be hard to deal with when it comes to fees but as he has repeated regularly this month there hasn’t been a single offer for any of his players.

Jordan Rossiter, Jason Holt and Joe Dodoo are believed to be negotiating pay-off’s for the final year of their contracts with interest in Eros Grezda drying up once clubs discover his Ibrox wages.
