Davie Hay has tipped Craig Gordon to replace Scott Bain as Celtic’s first choice keeper.

The former Hearts man made his first appearance of 2019 in Estonia on Tuesday, keeping a clean sheet as Celtic eased to a 2-0 win over Nomme Kalju.

Neil Lennon has cast a little doubt over who will be his first choice keeper despite Bain displacing Gordon while Brendan Rodgers was in charge.

After Celtic’s January break in Dubai Bain was handed the gloves despite Gordon ending 2018 with a few outstanding saves at Ibrox that spared Celtic’s blushes in a derby day defeat that could have been much larger.

The debate over who is the first choice keeper will be ended when the Celtic side to face St Johnstone is named tomorrow afternoon with Hay anticipating a change.

He told the Evening Times:

When it comes for the manager to choose between Craig Gordon and Scott Brown, Lenny will go with whoever he believes is going to make the most saves and take the most crosses. I believe that’s going to be Gordon.

Now, I have no word from inside the camp. I’m simply reading between the lines of what has been said so far. Bain has done nothing wrong. Indeed, his clean sheet record is fantastic. I just feel that Lennon will lean towards Gordon more once he’s fitter. We are going to see a lot of him this season.

Big Craig is an excellent shot-stopper. Bain took his place not because the Scotland man was throwing goals in; rather than he wasn’t as good as Rodgers wanted him to be when I came to passing it.

Gordon will be 37 at the end of this year is now in the final year of his Celtic contract.
