Legia Warsaw fans unfurled a huge image of Pope John Paul II before their side kicked off at Ibrox tonight.

Polish cardinal Karol Józef Wojty?a was appointed as Pope in 1978 and visited Scotland four years later including an open air mass for 200,000 in nearby Bellahouston Park.

Tonight’s match is being watched closely by UEFA with the home fans already the subject of two racism charges from their Europa League qualifiers.

Due to racist actions in the home match against St Joseph’s 3,000 seats were out of commission tonight with a banner for #equalgame spread across the empty seats.

Further racist behaviour in Poland last week will be punished tomorrow and could result in a stadium closure for the Ibrox side. In anticipation the club announced yesterday that they wouldn’t be taking any tickets for their next European away match.

Celtic will be at Ibrox on Sunday in the first Glasgow derby of the season.
