There are mixed messages around this morning over Celtic’s apparent interest in Birger Meling.

Last week there were reports of interest from Celtic in the Rosenborg defender with Chris Sutton claiming on Friday night that a deal was close.

Since Rosenborg are involved in a Champions League Play-Off with Dinamo Zagreb over the next two midweeks it’s hardly likely that they will be selling a key player when they are close to a £20m plus pay out.

This morning The Sun claims:

But the Daily Record are reporting the Hoops are no longer interested in Olympiakos ace Elabdellaoui and Rosenborg star Meling. Elabdellaoui had been linked with a move to Parkhead during the Brendan Rodgers era. The former Manchester City graduate is highly rated and was a potential target for Crystal Palace earlier this season. But reports suggest that a move to Glasgow is dead in the water.

The link provided by The Sun is to the homepage of the Record with no Celtic transfer update given in their live transfer blog.

Boli Bolingoli and Jonny Hayes played on the left of the Celtic defence in yesterday’s Betfred Cup win over Dunfermline but neither is a traditional left-back.

With a £13m transfer surplus created by the transfer of Kieran Tierney on top of the £38m in the bank account at the end of December Celtic aren’t short of funds to sign Meling or Omar Elabdellaoui, the right-back of Olympiacos.

A number of articles have appeared painting a picture of the breakdown of the club’s scouting network but having played against Rosenborg six times in the last two years it shouldn’t be too difficult to get the lowdown on Meling who is under contract until December 2020.
