After the high of the result in Romania I feel genuine sadness, not only at the news that our Bhoy, Kieran is on the way to a team that lacks a bit soul, but also on our long term goals.

Wednesday’s performance would have been very comfortable with Kieran Tierney in the left back slot, but that’s not the main point of this piece. The main issue is about our progression as a club and our money in the ‘bank’.

I think we all understand the issue of value and the focus on a strategy which delivers maximum value. However compare that against the Ajax recent income of some £140m approx and our annual defensive challenges as we face Champions League qualification, there is a clear argument that we aren’t on the optimal path.

Do we want to waste money, clearly we don’t, but at what point does the balance sheet start to become an weight around our shoulders? To end I wish KT all the luck in the world. It was a pleasure to see him play for and captain the greatest football team in the world.

He will NEVER walk alone.
