The spotlight is on Celtic to see if they will stand by Tom Boyd after the SFA Compliance Officer decided to investigate comments made on Celtic TV during the Betfred Cup tie against Dunfermline.

After an incident in which referee John Beaton refused to give Celtic a penalty in a clear case of handball the former Celtic skipper made a number of factual comments about the incident.

So far Celtic have refused to back Boyd in public despite the ridiculous investigation driven by media hysteria.

This afternoon BBC Scotland reported:

The Scottish FA compliance officer is to investigate comments made by former Celtic captain Tom Boyd about John Beaton during Saturday’s League Cup win against match against Dunfermline. Commentating for CelticTV, the club ambassador criticised the referee for not awarding the hosts a penalty.

“If he doesn’t know that’s a penalty he should not be in the middle of the park refereeing a football game,” Boyd said. “He’ll probably be welcomed down his pub tonight again.”

It seems that suggesting that it’s not the first time that Beaton has made a mistake has upset some media types along with a reference to going to the pub after the match.

The comment about going to the pub sparked a media outrage with the usual outlets hitting out at Boyd. Those most critical of the Celtic Ambassador tend to be those that cheer loudest in support of whatever moonbeams they are fed critical of Celtic.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Compliance Officer comes up with any charge for Boyd- of more interest will be the reaction from Celtic who have so far said nothing in defence of their co-commentator.

Tomorrow Celtic are expected to host a media conference to provide content for their various media partners to promote Thursday’s Europa League qualifier against AIK of Sweden.
