Tony Ralston has joined St Johnstone on a season long loan.

The defender came to the rescue away to AIK on Thursday night when he replaced Kris Ajer but the signings of Hatem Abd Elhamed and Moritz Bauer have left him down the pecking order.

St Johnstone have had a miserable start to the season with just two points from four SPFL matches as well as being knocked out of the Betfred Cup at the group stage.

Today their website announced:

The Club is delighted to announce the signing of Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston on a season-long-loan. The 20-year-old right-back joins Saints having come through Celtic’s youth academy before enjoying previous loan spells with Queen’s Park and with Dundee United in the Championship.

Anthony has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Celtic including in the UEFA Champions League and signed a long-term deal with the Scottish Champions back in December 2017 which runs until May 2022. The highly-rated youngster has also been capped at Scotland U21 level and will wear the number 21 jersey this season.

Two years ago Ralston appeared to be on the brink of a great career at Celtic but a knee injury away to Dundee soon after playing against Paris Saint Germain put him out of action for four months.

A stint on loan at Dundee United didn’t seem to help his Celtic prospects with Mikael Lustig the first choice right-back until Jeremy Toljan was signed on loan in January.

Celtic are still looking to sign Greg Taylor from Kilmarnock but it could be this evening before there is a breakthrough with that move.
