Up until 10.45am today Steven Gerrard could do no wrong, three wins in the SPFL alongside qualification for the group stage of the Europa League had earned the former Liverpool star the unquestioning adulation of the Ibrox support.

Today’s team news caused some concern with Jermain Defoe played ahead of Alfredo Morelos with wingers strangely absent from the starting XI. Flood the midfield and outplay Celtic seemed to be the plan but it’s one that went badly wrong.

The Hearts and Hand podcast is a great barometer of the Ibrox support, when the going is good they are world beaters but a set back, especially against Celtic and a team managed by Neil Lennon isn’t to be tolerated in any circumstances.

It was like going to the dentist on the day that my dog died and the wife ran away with the milkman

The gaffer has got to learn lessons.

Rangers had no out-ball, for some reason we went with Defoe upfront with Scott Arfield and Aribo just behind him. No width, no wingers, we didn’t get at Celtic’s dodgy full backs.

The game became more and more of a sludgefest, Rangers became more and more frustrated. Rangers didn’t deserve anything from that match.

The manager picked what looked like an away side, a containing side, that’s utterly bizarre. On top of the manager making errors in selection the team didn’t play well, nobody did well.

With an international break next weekend Gerrard will have two weeks of criticism before his side are next in action, if Celtic win at Hamilton they will be six points clear by the time Livingston arrive at Ibrox on September 14.
