Leigh Griffiths has indicated that he wants to return to the Scotland squad for next month’s European Championship qualifiers against Russia and San Marino.

The striker scored for Celtic in the opening SPFL wins over St Johnstone and Motherwell but was left out of the Scotland squad for the defeats against Russia and Belgium.

Clarke explained that he felt that it was best for Griffiths to continue his recovery away from the spotlight of international football despite Scotland’s lack of striking options.

Ollie McBurnie and Matt Philips made no impact in the recent matches with Johny Russell brought on as a sub against Belgium after Steven Naismith returned to Hearts.

The Sun claims:

LEIGH GRIFFITHS wants to make his Scotland comeback in Russia. SunSport understands the Celtic hitman was gutted to miss out on the painful Hampden defeats to the Russians and Belgium. Griffiths, 29, plans to tell boss Steve Clarke he’s ready to come back into the reckoning ahead of the Group I clash in Moscow next month. Clarke left Griffiths out of his last squad, insisting the striker didn’t need added pressure following his seven-month stint out while dealing with personal issues.

Vakoun Bayo’s double against Hearts appears to have relegated Griffiths to Celtic’s third choice striker behind Odsonne Edouard.

Unless there is an injury to Edouard or Bayo it’s difficult to see Griffiths forcing his way into the Celtic side with Scotland offering the prospect of meaningful match time.

Griffiths volenteered to play for Celtic in the Reserve Cup match away to Dundee last month, scoring in an hour long appearance in the 4-2 victory.
