Neil Lennon is backing Nicky Hammond to become Celtic’s permanent Head of Recruitment.

The former West Brom scout was taken on at the start of July after Lee Congerton had quit the hoops to be reunited with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City.

Details about Hammond’s job were light with a review expected at the end of the transfer window. In the end Celtic seemed to have strengthened over the course of the window but the arrivals came in too late to progress into the group phase of the Champions League.

The performance of the team at Ibrox on September 1 suggested that had the new faces been brought in earlier Cluj could have been negotiated to take Lennon’s side into the play-off for the Champions League group phase.

There was a slight shift towards signing players based in England with three younger prospects brought in from Southampton, Manchester United and Manchester City to challenge for first team football.

Nicky is working away in the background on writing up a report and away talking to all the other scouts we have on the ground so we will have a good look at that when it’s finalised,” Lennon told The Sun. “I certainly think that he would be a very good candidate, put it that way.”

The £25m transfer of Kieran Tierney ensured that for the second summer running Celtic made a substantial profit from the transfer window.
