Neil Lennon is hoping to get a new contract on the table for Nir Bitton.

The Israeli was signed by Lennon in 2013 for around £1m from Ashdod but is out of contract at the end of this season.

Under Ronny Deila the 27-year-old was a regular starter but over the last three seasons his appearances have dropped dramatically with more games at the back than in the middle of the park.

At Ibrox Bitton put in a commanding display to anchor three new defenders towards a win bonus but picked up a hamstring injury that will see him ruled out of action for another few weeks.

Getting back into the Celtic side won’t be easy but his boss is an admirer with Lennon telling The Sun that he is looking to sort out a fresh contract:

I was delighted with the way he was playing, he’s been outstanding whether he has played in midfield or at centre-half. Sometimes he can be a bit too composed! But from what I’ve seen of him lately, he’s been absolutely superb.

There’s a maturity about him as well that has pleased me. Obviously we know about his contract situation and that’s something we’ll be looking to change as we go along too. Hopefully we can get it sorted soon.

Only Scott Brown and Academy graduates James Forrest and Callum McGregor have been at the club longer than Bitton although McGregor had still to make his debut when Bitton was signed.
