Davie Provan has praised Celtic for their 1-1 draw with Rennes but slammed UEFA and referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez.

Neil Lennon’s side put in an impressive 90 minutes plus performance against the French side as they opened their Europa League campaign with a very credible draw.

Celtic were never in danger, there was no backs-to-the-wall defending as they exerted themselves on a team that has beaten Paris Saint Germain this season.

The only downside to the night was the performance of the match official with UEFA’s second tournament failing to provide the back-up of VAR.

In The Sun Provan claimed:

Celtic produced a top performance in France. But for a dumpling referee and some amateur defending from Kristoffer Ajer, Celts would be two points better off. How can a multi-billion euro organisation like Uefa not have VAR in all of their tournaments?

During a pre-season friendly in Switzerland Jozo Simunovic was given a VAR red card which resulted in a two match domestic suspension.

The Scottish football authorities haven’t made any comment on introducing VAR, with the semi and finals of both cup competitions covered by live television there would be minimal costs involved in providing match officials with extra help.
