Celtic fans are split over the prospect of signing Lawrence Shankland in January.
The Dundee United striker has scored 15 goals in 12 matches this season which mirrors the sort of scoring return he had in the first half of last season which included a hat-trick at Tannadice that was noted by Robbie Neilson.
Shankland was a free agent in the summer but despite reports of interest from Sunderland he opted to go to Dundee United where he has settled instantly as they attempt to end their exile from the top flight of the Scottish game.
Until he arrived at Ayr United two years ago it seemed that the striker was slipping down the ladder. He made no impact joining Aberdeen from Queens Park in 2013 with loan spells in The Championship failing to suggest anything out of the ordinary.
Under Ian McCall at Somerset Park his career kicked off with 50 league goals in 59 appearances but some Celtic fans want to see Jonathan Afolabi given his chance.
With his contract at Southampton expiring in the summer Celtic stepped in with a three year deal with Afolabi looking very impressive in last week’s 4-2 Reserve Cup win over Morton. The 19-year-old showed his touch around goal and has the physique to meet the demands of first team football should he be called upon.
With Leigh Griffiths still dogged by injuries and Odsonne Edouard likely to be at the Olympic Games next summer a striker is likely to be high on Celtic’s thoughts when the January transfer window opens.
Would rather see what Afolabi can do. Shankland is playing at his level, top of championship.

Was thinking the same myself. Good in the air, fast, good passing and moving and can score…. ??

Would rather we give Ofalabi a chance. If not, Gary Hooper is still available?

Should have signed him in the summer for a lot less than what he is worth now.

Deffo worth a punt, don’t get me wrong before he went to Ayr united he wasn’t setting the heather on fire .. but the last few seasons he has become a different player. ?

Andy Gray was my hero years ago Doods was a fantastic finisher amongst a few others but when I watch Shankland goalscoring looks so natural to him put the ball to him in box he will hit the net
