When Kevin Clancy failed to award Celtic two penalties in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Hibs it was hardly a surprise, the Glasgow based official has developed a pattern of honest mistakes in Celtic matches.

There was no need for VAR to come to the rescue for yesterday’s decisions, the match referee and his assistant, Alan Mulvanny, both had clear views as Lewis Stevenson brought down Ryan Christie before Daryl Horgan did likewise with Moritz Bauer.

Over the last 12 months Clancy has been involved in the following decisions which denied Celtic points

11 November 2018: Livingston 0-0 Celtic

Clancy decides to give Dolly Menga a verbal warning for headbutting Christie. The SFA Compliance Officer rules otherwise with the Livingston forward given a two match retrospective suspension

5 December 2018: Motherwell 1-1 Celtic

With Celtic leading 1-0 Filip Benkovic controls the ball and ‘scores’ from a corner kick, for no apparent reason Clancy decided to disallow the effort from the on-loan defender.

12 May 2019, Celtic lose 2-0 at Ibrox

As he prepares for a corner kick Scott Brown is grounded by a deliberate elbow from Jon Flanagan. Clancy decides that it is only worth a booking. The SFA Compliance Officer upgrades it to an ordering off which is successfully appealed as SFA discipline falls apart.

With a place on the FIFA list Clancy is assured of getting the top domestic appointments from the SFA regardless of his performances.

Scottish referees are sponsored by Specasavers.
