Alex Buttner has claimed that he turned down offers from Celtic as well as clubs from Turkey, Greece and Cyprus to sign for MLS outfit New England Revolution.

The Dutchman had a brief spell at Manchester United to light up his CV but in recent years it has been a downward spiral through Dinamo Moscow, Anderlecht and Vitesse.

Playing in the MLS has many attractions with a relaxed lifestyle in what for many is a holiday destination allowing players to pick up a nice wage while on something of a vacation.

Celtic certainly looked far and wide for left-back options during the summer but an approach from the players agent is much more likely that Butner popping up on a list of Celtic transfer targets.

Discussing his options before moving to the States, Buttner told Dutch publisher Gelder Lander:

Vitesse wanted to keep me and there was a three-year deal on offer, but we couldn’t figure it out. Besiktas then put in a concrete offer but that fell through. Fenerbahce, PAOK, Apoel Nicosia and Celtic were all interested. This week Rangers and Stoke City became interested but the decision had already been made. Revolution it is.

At the start of July Celtic signed Boli Bolingoli from Rapid Vienna with Greg Taylor moving from Kilmarnock on transfer deadline day.
