Nicky Hammond has been urged to sign one player above all others after being appointed Celtic’s Head of Football Operations.

Filip Benkovic and David Turnbull have their backers but securing a deal to bring Victor Wanyama back to Glasgow would be met with almost universal approval.

Neil Lennon has confirmed that contact was made during the summer but it seemed to be little more than a general enquiry rather than serious negotiations.

Wanyama seemed certain to be moving to Bruges during the summer but as that deal dragged on then collapsed Celtic supporters were given hope that the powerful midfielder could be on his way back to the club he left in 2013.

Southampton was his immediate destination after his £13m deal, when Mauricio Pochettino moved to Spurs in 2014 he returned to St Mary’s two years later to be reunited with the powerful midfielder.

Just 47 EPL starts in three years has been a poor return for Wanyama in the capital with a troublesome knee injury hampering his prospects.

Spurs seem keen to move him on but with his contract running until June 2021 when he turns 30 the deal will need to be right for the player regardless of the emotional prospect of being reunited with Neil Lennon at Celtic.
