Jonathan Afolabi is suffering from a hamstring injury.

Yesterday it emerged that the striker had been forced to pull out of Ireland’s u-21 squad for the matches against Italy and Iceland.

Afolabi was part of the Ireland u-19 squad that reached the semi-finals of the European Championships during the summer before joining Celtic as a free agent after his Southampton contract expired.

Under Stephen Kenny Ireland’s u-21 side have opened the European Championship campaign with three victories but the Celtic new boy will need to watch from the sidelines as they take on Italy tonight.

Updating on the Ireland u-21 squad The 42 reports:

The talented attacker (Michael Obafemi) has plenty of competition for a place up front. Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jonathan Afolabi (who is a concern with a tight hamstring injury) will also be hoping to figure, and the trio have impressed in the campaign so far.

Afolabi’s Celtic team-mate, Lee O’Connor is in line to play tonight after starting the last three qualifiers.

Celtic duo Barry Coffey and Armstrong Oko-Flex are with the Ireland u-19 squad for the friendly double header with Denmark on Friday and Monday.
