Steven Gerrard has pleaded with the Ibrox boo-boys to lay off James Tavernier.

The skipper missed his third penalty of the season in the 2-1 win over Motherwell and is unlikely to be in contention for the October Player of the Moth.

At the start of the month Tav was at fault for both goals lost to Young Boys of Berne and followed that up last week with a great fresh air header to present Hearts with the opener in the 1-1 draw at Tynecastle.

The former Wigan utility man has come in for heavy criticism from supporters unconvinced that he should be the captain and in charge of every set piece

After today’s match Gerrard told The Sun:

I will consider taking James off pens. I don’t think I have to make that decision right now but it will certainly be on my mind over the next 24 to 48 hours.

I don’t think you can doubt James’ character. He knows that in the last couple of weeks, he’s in the firing line but, I’d like the crowd to help him a bit more. Sometimes when it’s tough and you’re not at your best, you need your crowd to be with you rather than against you.

So there’s a plea for the crowd to stay with him because he will play through it and he can change games, like he did for us today.

After today’s matches Celtic are clear at the top on goal difference despite playing six of their first ten matches away from home. Gerrard’s side have played six of their opening ten matches at Ibrox.
