Celtic fans will have to wait until October 17 for the all clear to their trip to Rome to watch the bhoys in action against Lazio next month.

Yesterday it was announced that Celtic would be given 9,000 tickets for the Stadio Olympico but last night Lazio were hit with another racism charge from UEFA. Closing a stand or the stadium are options available to punish the club.

The Italian side have been serial offenders down the years with sanctions including stand closures going back over a decade

UEFA announced:

Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Europa League group stage match between S.S. Lazio and Stade Rennais FC (2-1), played on 3 October in Italy. Charges against S.S. Lazio:– Racist behaviour – Art. 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR)

The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will deal with this case at its meeting on 17 October.

With the Stadio Olympico less than half full for Europa League matches closing a stand or part of a stand has little effect on the club with repeated UEFA sanctions failing to bring a change in fan actions.

In 2013 Lazio were forced to play two matches behind closed doors by UEFA for racist behaviour.

After multiple visits to Milan, Barcelona and Trondheim in recent seasons the trip to Rome next month has caught the attention of the Celtic support as opposed to visiting Rennes or the Romanian town of Clu in December.
