‘Utterly dreadful- Tav’s Nightmare in the Wankdorf’ The Sun tears into hapless Ibrox captain!

James Tavernier was the Ibrox fall guy last night as Steven Gerrard’s side lost 2-1 to Young Boys of Bern at the new look Wakdorf Stadium.

Alfredo Morelos set up a night of Europa League glory for the visitors when he opened the scoring just before half time but after the break the man with the arm-band decided to step in.

A few minutes into the second half Tav decided to dribble towards his own goal, was dispossessed with the ball thrown across the goal mouth for the Swiss side to equalise.

As the clock struck the critical 86th minute the Ibrox side were sitting on a point and top place in the group but sadly for the former Wigan starlet there was one more twist on the night.

Over-stretching for a simple headed clearance Tav failed to make contact, his opponent nipped in and smashed a stoppage time shop past the despairing right hand of Allan McGregor in goals.

Football can be a cruel game, there’s more to it than slotting away penalties against Aberdeen but with the armband of dignity Tav will soon be in the media explaining how he’ll bounce back just as he has after every derby defeat from Celtic and cup exit.
