A group of Lazio fans were allowed to walk through Glasgow city centre today making Nazi salutes without police intervention.

Around 1,300 Italian fans are expected at the game with a long record of racist action that has brought their club into regular conflict with UEFA.

Actions away from the stadium don’t fall within UEFA regulations but Police Scotland and UEFA can have little doubt about the intentions of the Lazio supporters at Celtic Park tonight.

Lazio are obliged to get the names and passport numbers of all fans that are issued with a match ticket to ensure some degree of control. If Nazi salutes are performed inside Celtic Park tonight Police Scotland will have to decide whether they move in to make arrests or sit back and decide to act on video evidence.

Celtic have been given an allocation of 9,000 tickets for the away match in Rome next month with UEFA forcing a partial closure of the Curva Nord as a consequence of racist actions during the 2-1 win over Rennes.

Tonight’s match was sold out within 24 hours of Celtic’s win over Cluj.
