Jonathan Afolabi was back on the training ground after playing for 45 minutes in last night’s friendly against Stenhousemuir.

The striker suffered a hamstring injury last month when he was on duty with the Ireland u-21 side missing out on the chance to follow Jeremie Frimpong into the first team picture.

Injuries to Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Bayo left Odsonne Edouard as Celtic’s only available striker but a fully fit Afolabi could be involved in first team football before the end of the year.

Celtic signed the young striker in July after he impressed for Ireland as they reached the semi-finals of the u-19 European Championships despite being released by Southampton at the end of last season.

Afolabi impressed in a couple of reserve team appearances at the start of the season, mixing his strength and skill with an instinct around goal.

With no Reserve League fixtures Celtic are arranging matches on a regular basis but on December 2 there is a Reserve Cup tie against Motherwell at Lennoxtown which will decide which side goes through to the knock out phase.
