Callum McGregor has already spent more of his life at Celtic but didn’t flinch about signing up for another 12 months taking him to 2024.

The midfielder signed a new contract last December, committing him until 2023 but reflecting his growing status at the club he has been given another deal.

When Brendan Rodgers arrived at the club in 2016 McGregor looked like a useful squad filler, capable of playing a dozen games a season if there was a problem with Scott Brown, Nir Bitton, Stefan Johansen or Stuart Armstrong.

The former Liverpool boss had remembered the young midfielder playing for Notts County in a cup tie at Anfield and felt that there was something to work with.

Over the last three years McGregor has developed into a critical part of the team, having been at the club since the age of eight it’s fair to say that Celtic is in his DNA.

At the age of 26 the midfielder is approaching the best years of his career with every chance that they’ll be spent collecting trophies at Celtic.

“Obviously, I really value how highly they regard me at the club as well,” McGregor told The Sun. “For me, I am certainly looking forward to the next few years. Hopefully we can extend it even further and I could end up finishing my career at Celtic.

“The club have been great with me. It’s a real massive statement from them and I do feel valued. It was a no-brainer to go and sign on the dotted line.

“Coming from where I started, as an eight-year-old, I have been here for 18 years now. To extend that to 20-plus years would be an amazing thing.”

He added: “It’s a massive point in my career and the club recognised that. I have a big four or five years coming up and the gaffer has been great since he came in.

“It shows I am well regarded at the club when they hand you a big, big contract at this point. It’s about trying to repay the club and keep playing well.”

With Scott Brown eight years his senior McGregor is being tipped as a future Celtic captain, if Broony ever decides to retire.
