Mo Elyounoussi has pulled out of Norway’s double header against the Faroe Isles and Malta with the winger returning to Celtic for treatment.

The on-loan Southampton winger has been in outstanding form recently with a run of goals and assists at home and in Europe.

Celtic’s medical team will have been in contact with their Norwegian counterparts and will now assess Elyounoussi over the weekend to see if he will be available to face Livingston next Saturday.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Norway boss Lars Lagerback said: “Unfortunately, Mohamed has an injured foot and can’t play against the Faroe Islands or Malta. He has left the squad and returned to his club.”

With Hatem Abd Elhamed out for six weeks Celtic are starting to suffer from their exertions so far this season.

Vakoun Bayo is also out for an extended period while Leigh Griffiths and Mikey Johnston haven’t played since August and September respectively. Jozo Simunovic isn’t expected to play again this year.

Neil Lennon will have an anxious time over the next few days as he waits for word on his international players although Tom Rogic appears to have come through Australia’s 1-0 win over Jordan unscathed.
