Glasgow MSP John Mason has upset a number of loyal subjects by backing HMRC following the recent attack from The Times Scotland.

In a one-day wonder story The Times claimed that there may have been a £50m tax error in the so-called Big Tax Case. Incredibly the newspaper claimed that this had an impact on the death of the club in 2012 even though the ruling from the Supreme Court wasn’t made until 2017.

Other publishers were quickly on the story despite the complete lack of any evidence with HMRC forced to go public at what they described as inaccurate and partial reporting.

In most cases of tax cheating there is a media backlash against those involved but in the case of the various Ibrox cases it seems that those involved are given very sympathetic coverage. Dave Murray continues his business unaffected despite years of running disguised remuneration that cost the public purse tens of millions of pounds.

Covering Mason’s motion at the Scottish Parliament the Daily Record reports:

That the Parliament notes the recent publication by The Times, which stated that Rangers FC’s insolvency was the result of an HMRC overestimation of taxes owed by £50 million; understands that HMRC has stated that no such mistakes were made and that it won its case against Rangers’ tax avoidance scheme in the Supreme Court; recognises that HMRC has also stated that “inaccurate and partial reporting only serves to undermine public trust in the tax system”, and considers that public trust in the tax system is paramount given the importance of taxation for the provision of public services and ensuring a fairer and more progressive Scotland.

The current Ibrox club will host their AGM today at the Clyde Auditorium.
