Le Mans president Thierry Gomez has welcomed Celtic’s interest in Stephane Diarra.

On Tuesday respected French publisher L’Equipe claimed that Celtic were watching the 20-year-old midfielder who has also interested Leicester and Newcastle.

Last season Le Mans won promotion to League 2 with the selling of players a reflected compliment for the way that the club is developing.

The recent success of French players at Celtic has given the hoops a positive profile in France with a 20-year-old fitting the well-established profile of Celtic signings.

“Since we’ve got to Ligue 2 there’s an enforced change of status,” Gomez told Ouest France.

“We’ll need to get used to these rumours. After that I’m not unhappy if some of our players are of interest to other clubs, that’s just proof that we’re working well. So far we haven’t had any offers. After that, Stephane knows where he’s come from.

“We went and got him from Rennes when he was having a difficult time, we’ve relaunched him well. If something were to happen, it would happen with our support.

Right now this subject isn’t on the agenda, we’re heading into a period that can bring hope, but also danger, so let’s focus on our next games.”

At the moment Celtic seem well stocked for midfielders with Olivier Ntcham and Tom Rogic struggling to get game time due to the form of Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie.

Eboue Kouassi is well out of the picture with teenager Luca Connell signed from Bolton in the summer. David Turnbull could be the subject of renewed interest in January but recruitment is an on-going process with Diarra the type of player that is bound to be of interest.
