Neil Lennon has explained that Leigh Griffiths is still short of peak physical fitness.

The striker has been back in full training for over a week but despite the lack of striking options failed to make the bench for today’s 2-0 win over Motherwell.

Lennon had name checked the striker on Friday at his pre-match media conference and provided Radio Scotland with an update after naming his side for the Motherwell match.

Asked if striker Leigh Griffiths is likely to return to action before Christmas, he replies: “He needs to get up to condition physically – hopefully he can do that over the next few weeks.”

Griffiths scored away to Motherwell at the start of the season but hasn’t had any game time since coming on for the final 15 minutes of the 3-1 win over Hearts at the end of August.

Last December Griffiths was given time off to deal with non-footballing matters, in his pre-match interview Lennon confirmed that the continuing absence was purely a physical matter.

With Vokoun Bayo also out injured it’s expected that a striker will be top of Lennon’s January transfer wish list.
