Stephen Welsh has been named in the SPFL Team of the Week after helping Morton to a 1-0 win over Arbroath at Cappielow.

The 19-year-old was switched from right-back to the more familiar position of central defence and helped David Hopkins side to a rare clean sheet and three vital points.

Narrow defeats away to Dundee and Partick Thistle had dragged Morton towards the bottom of the table but Saturday’s win lifts them five points ahead of Thistle at the bottom of the table and four points away from Inverness Caley Thistle in the final play-off place.

Welsh featured for Celtic during their pre-season trip to Austria and Switzerland but with no reserve football has gone out on loan to The Championship to gain first team experience.

Fellow defender Robbie Deas is on loan at Alloa while goalkeepers Ross Doohan and Conor Hazard are out on loan at Ayr United and Dundee.

On Saturday Morton switch their attention to the Scottish Cup with Brora Rangers visiting Cappielow.
