Dermot Gallagher has shown up the Sportscene panel with his assessment of Sam Cosgrove’s red card against Celtic on Saturday.
While the ‘Three Wise Men’ of Steven Thompson, Michael Stewart and Marvin Bartley felt that it was harsh and that he got the ball former referee Gallagher correctly stated that it was serious foul play.
No one is debating that Cosgrove made contact with the ball but racing at high speed with both feet off the ground there was a strong risk of serious injury to Ajer.
Cosgrove’s tackle on Ajer was a red for serious foul play, despite one of the Sky guests hailing it as a “great tackle.” Yes, Cosgrove got the ball, but he flew into Ajer with both feet off the ground & studs showing. He could easily have inflicted a career-ending injury. https://t.co/qYow5IKELR

Fortunately the Celtic defender anticipated the lunge and moved to minimise contact allowing him to play out the remainder of the match.
After the match Derek McInnes claimed that it was a great tackle and claimed that Ajer was laughing and winking as Cosgrove was getting sent off. This afternoon Aberdeen appealed against the red card with a decision due before Thursday’s home match against Livingston.
