Without naming him Chris Sutton has called out the former Kilmarnock striker making a living putting the boot into Scottish football.

A cold day out in Dingwall watching Celtic hit top form seemed too much to take for Kris Boyd as he claimed that there were no great players in Scottish football.

The EPL is currently enjoying the talents of Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and John McGinn at the highest level with Arsenal splashing out £25m for Kieran Tierney in the summer.

Ryan Christie, Odsonne Edouard, Callum McGregor and James Forrest were as influential as Tierney last season with clubs from England looking for the first sign of encouragement to take those Celtic stars south of the border.

Sutton covers the English game for BT Sport, the Daily Mail and BBC Five Live and explained to Daily Record readers why the Sky Sports expert has got it all wrong.

It will be great to see the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Alfredo Morelos, Callum McGregor, Ryan Kent and a great deal more doing what they do best on the biggest stage. Then there’s Scott Brown, Ryan Christie, Jermaine Defoe and Allan McGregor – there’s a huge list of top players.

So don’t listen to other sneering pundits talking Scottish football down. No great players? Do me a favour. I can’t understand why anyone would put the boot in to the game up here when there is so much to be positive about this weekend.

In his column in The Sun Boyd has tipped Steven Gerrard to break his trophy drought at Hampden tomorrow.
