Midway through the second half of today’s Glasgow derby an unlikely figure appeared behind Allan McGregor’s goal, perhaps sharing instructions.

Andy Firth is on the payroll of the Ibrox club but wasn’t listed as a substitute and isn’t on the coaching or medical staff. For reasons unknown he was sitting in the technical area during the match before appearing behind McGregor’s goal.

On the team-sheet handed in to the match referee clubs list who will be in their technical area with only substitutes allowed outside of the area. Wes Foderingham was the substitute keeper today with Firth apparently saving himself on the price of a ticket.

Firth joined up at Ibrox last January and has played just seven minutes of first team football, making a substitute appearance in the final match of last season.

It can only be assumed that he was in the technical area then sent on to speak to McGregor with the approval of Steven Gerrard. Any punishment of the third choice keeper would be pointless but charging the Ibrox manager may ensure that rules are adhered to in future.
