Image for Lennon responds to Benkovic speculation

Neil Lennon feels that he is well covered in central defence with a move for Filip Benkovic in this transfer window unlikely.

The defender spent last season on loan at Celtic but has been unable to make any impact on the Leicester City first team despite his relationship with Brendan Rodgers.

Middlesbrough and Derby have been linked with a loan deal for Benkovic who was on the bench for Leicester in tonight’s League Cup semi-final away to Aston Villa.

At the weekend Celtic were without Kris Ajer, Hatem Abd Elhamed and Nir Bitton leaving Chris Jullien and Jozo Simunovic as the only available first team central defenders.

Will you be actively looking in the next couple of days?

Nick (Hammond) is working very diligently in the background to see if there is anything out there but like I said it is a very.,, I mean there is only four days left and it’s a very difficult thing to do in January but we’ve brought in two who we think are good pieces of business (Klimala and Soro). If it stops there then great. If there is someone available that catches our eye, who is affordable we might look at it but at the minute it’s very quiet

Question) Brendan Rodgers said Filip Benkovic could go out on loan

I was asked that at the weekend but I think that we are well covered at centre half.

Leicester will be expecting Benkovic to get first team football if he goes out on loan but Ajer and Jullien seem well established as Celtic’s first choice central defenders.

Benkovic cost Leicester £13m when he was signed from Dinamo Zagreb in 2018 but after 18 months he appears no closer to securing a run in the team.
