Aiden McGeady has signed for Charlton until the end of the season.

With Celtic looking to bring in an experienced winger there had been speculation of a return for the Irish internationalist but that can now be ruled out.

McGeady was sold to Spartak Moscow for £11m in 2010 before returning to the UK with moves to Everton and Sunderland.

Before Christmas Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson made it clear that he had no future at the Stadium of Light, on Tuesday the 33-year-old watched Hibs beat Dundee United in the Scottish Cup sparking speculation that he could be re-united with former Sunderland boss Jack Ross.

Late last night Charlton signed the winger with Lee Bowyer telling the club website: “Bringing in someone with his quality is going to add to the squad. Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player. He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing.

“He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player. Coming into the back end of the season experience can be important, Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”

Charlton beat Sunderland in the Play Off Final last season but are currently fourth bottom in the Championship, four points above Wigan Athletic in the relegation zone.
