Spurs’ valuation of Victor Wanyama has dropped from £17m to £9m since the summer but is likely to have to fall further to move the midfielder on.

Celtic have been linked with a move for their former midfielder since Neil Lennon took over but based on figures published in The Standard it’s difficult to see how a deal could be achieved.

In some instances a player can push through a move but in chief executive Daniel Levin Spurs have one of the toughest negotiators in the business.

Wanyama seemed close to joining Brugge during the summer but suggestions of knee problems surfaced with the move falling through despite the Belgian side qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League.

Discussing the present situation, The Standard reports:

The 28-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Jose Mourinho with his only appearance under the Portuguese coming in last month’s Champions League dead rubber defeat at Bayern Munich.

Standard Sport understands there have been several enquiries for Wanyama – including from two unnamed Premier League clubs – but nobody is yet willing to meet Spurs’ valuation.

It is believed Waynama’s £62,000-a-week wages are also proving a stumbling block. The Kenya international joined Tottenham from Southampton for £11m in 2016, following the same path taken by manager Mauricio Pochettino, who brought him to the south coast from Celtic.

He enjoyed a fine debut campaign but has since struggled with injuries and fallen out of favour, with Celtic among those clubs interested in reviving his career. Galatasaray are also monitoring the situation with an initial loan period being proposed.

Ismaila Soro’s arrival at Celtic appear to have killed off interest in Wanyama but with a week to go in the transfer window there is still scope for things to change.
