According to a report in The Athletic Southampton are ‘closely monitoring’ Jeremie Frimpong.

Closely monitoring or ‘keeping tabs’ is what Recruitment and Scouting departments do, they attend matches, watch televised games and study reports.

If the club that has signed Victor Wanyama, Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong weren’t watching Celtic matches closely their Recruitment Department would have some awkward questions to answer. Keeping tabs on Forster and Moi Elyounoussi will also be a basic part of a functioning Recruitment Team.

As well as Frimpong Southampton will also closely be following the form of Ryan Christie, Kris Ajer and Callum McGregor, they’ll also have a file or two on Mikey Johnston just as Celtic kept a close eye on Jonathan Afolabi before signing him in the summer.

The Sun reports:

CELTIC star Jeremie Frimpong is being closely monitored by Southampton, according to reports.

The Hoops defender, 19, has became a fan favourite since joining the Parkhead club from Manchester City last summer. But according to The Athletic, the Saints are just one of several English Premier League clubs that are keeping an eye on his performances.

Many of these sides have reportedly sent scouts to watch the Dutch youth international in action in recent weeks. And while there is no chance of Frimpong leaving Parkhead this month, Celtic’s resolve to keep him could reportedly be tested at the end of the season.

Part of Celtic’s interest in signing Frimpong last year was the prospect of selling him on. It’s believed that Manchester City will be due 30% of any fee but a profit is a profit to a PLC that has been in profit for the last few seasons thanks to the sales of Moussa Dembele and Armstrong with Kieran Tierney contributing a big slice of this season’s turnover.

Celtic know that Frimpong is unlikely to follow James Forrest and stay at the club for life. A large pay hike should be on offer to reflect his progress since moving from Manchester City, one that acknowledges his role in the team.

That would involve extending his contract beyond 2023 but as Tierney’s deal illustrated when the price is right contracts can be broken.
