Agitated would be the best way to describe Steven Gerrard at today’s media conference.

Normally the Liverpool legend meets the media before training at Murray Park but today he waited till lunchtime and looked pale after recent results.

Putting a gloss on a 10 point deficit, an eight point swing over four weeks was never going to be easy despite having plenty of up-beat buzzwords and stats to fall back on.

For his first time in management Gerrard was being questioned by the supporters who celebrated his arrival on the back of the hot air generated by Pedro Caixinha and Mark Warburton.

Straight after the defeat at Kilmarnock Gerrard mentioned his players having issues, questioned their bottle and described their defending as schoolboy.

Criticism from supporters was much more severe but was directed mainly at the manager for standing by players and a system that has been caught short repeatedly in recent weeks, Celtic scoring for fun as they pull away at the top of the SPFL hasn’t helped the cause.

Early on in today’s media conference Gerrard showed how the pressure is getting through to him.

Question is inaudible

First of all, am I allowed to criticise me players?

Pause, silence

Am I allowed? Is that not my job, what’s the problem?

Follow up question is inaudible

What would you have thought of me if I had said after that game that there’s no problems here, we’re all fine. Seriously, what would you have thought of me?

Again follow up is inaudible

Next question.

Gerrard’s side face in-form Livingston tomorrow followed by a home Europa League tie against Braga on Thursday.
