Steven Thompson believes that Steven Gerrard has handed the SPFL title to Celtic.
Six weeks ago BBC Sportscene was warming up for a classic ‘Old Firm title race’ but after the midweek results Tommo is throwing in the towel.
In Wednesday night Celtic crushed Hearts 5-0 to do their part of the bargain but under pressure at Kilmarnock Gerrard’s side chucked away their half time lead.
After the match the Ibrox boss again turned on his players, saying that they had issues and highlighting the schoolboy defending from the stars that he signed.
Since the winter break the two Glasgow clubs have gone off in completely different directions. Celtic’s 100% record has given them a goal difference advantage of 18 with the problems of the Ibrox club seeing them slip 10 points adrift.
Speaking on Sportscene last night Thompson said:
Obviously there is a lot of football to be played but I do not see Rangers coming back, making up that points deficit. They look like they think that the job was done at Parkhead on the 29th.
Coming into 2020 Celtic have been galvanised by that result and performance. And Rangers, poor against Hearts, that should have been the warning sign, that should have been it, that’s us had our only blip but you know it’s not turned out that way.
They’ve continued to perform badly and for me they’ve thrown it away.
Tomorrow Livingston visit a nervous Ibrox with everything on the line for Gerrard. There are four more rounds of SPFL fixtures before the next Glasgow derby with pressure bound to go through the roof if the gap goes beyond 10 points.
Michael Stewart was replaced by James McFadden on last night’s Sportscene.
