Gardening Leave calling on Mr Gerrard

It has often been said that ‘It’s the hope that kills them’ with Steven Gerrard likely to discover that in the next few days.

The Liverpool legend has bought into the whole Ibrox ethos with a frenzy build up around the dream of ‘Stopping the Selik’. How it is done is of no consequence, whatever the cost it’ll be worth it as the ludicrous ‘Going for 55’ campaign gathered momentum.

Not bad for a club formed in 2012 with just the 2016 Petrofac Cup on its honours list.

After his first domestic match, ironically a draw against Aberdeen, Gerrard launched into full paranoia mode claiming that match officials have been against ‘Rangers’ for years. After five minutes in the door.

If he was shrewd Gerrard would take note of what happened to his predecessors, Pedro, Warbo and Coisty.

Gerrard has been far from shrewd, if anything he has fanned the flames, going the extra mile to fuel the paranoia.

Millions have been spent, he has played along with every stunt. Alfredo Morelos won’t be sold for less than £40m, Juventus wanted to sign Glen Kamara and Borna Barisic was on the radar of Roma.

As he added players to the pay-roll expectations grew. In the summer £7m was committed to signing Ryan Kent after the signing of half a dozen wingers.

The League Cup Final of December 2019 was a travesty of justice as the Liverpool legend was cruelly denied his first trophy in management. Revenge was quickly dished out at Celtic Park but the post winter break form has been horrendous.

Five points dropped in four matches isn’t title winning form. When your £50m star striker is the subject of front-page tabloid scandals, the signs are ominous.

Time is running out on Mr Gerrard, it looks only a matter of time before he joins Pedro, Warbo and Coisty with his special chapter in The Banter Years.
