Once again Alan Muir was at the centre of penalty controversy with no prizes for guessing which way his decision went.

In the last round of the Scottish Cup he failed to give Celtic a penalty when Jeremie Frimpong was pushed over by James Penrice. Late in the match the Aberdeen based whistler pointed to the penalty spot after a brilliantly timed tackle by the young Celtic defender.

Today it was Hamilton’s turn to be on the end of Muir’s bizarre interpretation of the penalty rule.

Just before half-time, with the score level at 1-1 Alex Gogic hit the by-line line and fired a cross into the six yard box. Panic stricken Connor Goldston attempted to head the ball for a corner with the insurance of sticking out his left arm to ensure that the ball didn’t get past him. Contact was clear.

Muir and his assistant apparently missed Goldson’s arm blocking the ball, there was only one possible explanation for the path that the ball took. There were some similarities with the handball from Josh Meekings that Muir and Steven McLean missed in the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle.

A year later McLean refereed the final of the Scottish Cup.
