Leigh Griffiths was delighted to score his first Celtic Park goal since August in yesterday’s 3-1 win over Kilmarnock.

The striker has been through a lot since netting against St Johnstone in the opening SPFL match of the season.

At the turn of the year Celtic fans were speculating over bringing in a striker to compete with Odsonne Edouard and relieve the Frenchman of the pressure of being a one man strike force.

Griffiths looked like yesterday’s man but goals at Firhill, Rugby Park, McDiamid Park and Fir Park announced his return, coinciding with Celtic creating daylight at the top of the table in the race for a ninth successive title.

Griffiths told The Sun:

It was good to be back and get on the scoresheet. I was disappointed to miss Thursday. It was a precautionary thing more than anything. I’m feeling good.

That’s my first goal at home since August, so it was a relief. I’m happy to contribute, whether it’s goals or setting up others. It’s been brilliant just being back involved and hopefully it will continue for a long, long time.

The partnership with Odsonne is still growing. Since we’ve been paired together we’ve tried to link up the play as much as we can. You see his movement. He’s a great talent and he’s only going to get better as well.

He’s unselfish. As a striker you have to score goals, but the guy’s got the whole package, whether it’s scoring or linking the play. You see him around the box. We try to link up as much as possible and bring in a few others. It’s working well and long may it continue.

Griffiths missed last week’s Europa League tie away to Copenhagen due to a slight hamstring injury but recovered to start yesterday’s win over Kilmarnock.

Celtic turn their attention to cup competitions in their next two matches but the target of a ninth successive league win is driving them on while another challenge from Ibrox crumbles away.
