Celtic’s trophy push received a major boost yesterday when Jeremie Frimpong was named among the substitutes at Aberdeen.

The defender was on the receiving end of a brutal challenge from Kilmarnock’s Alan Power on January 22, after being stretchered off at Rugby Park he missed six matches before returning to duty yesterday.

Like Moi Elyounoussi, the introduction of Frimpong to the Celtic side in the autumn coincided with the best run of form of the season so far. The League Cup semi-final win over Hibs at Hampden could have ran into double figures.

The availability of the 19-year-old considerably adds to Neil Lennon’s options, playing at right-back or perhaps more effectively at right wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation.

Yesterday’s starting XI was strong; adding Elyounoussi, Frimpong, Christie and Rogic gives Lennon a variety of options in terms of formation and personnel.

After a glut of away fixtures Celtic are firmly in the driving seat in the SPFL Premiership as two cup competitions get towards the exciting stage.

Lennon will be calling in all of his quality players with Frimpong perhaps ready to make a big contribution after an enforced break that should see him refreshed and ready to pick up where he got booted off the pitch at Rugby Park.
