Alex Rae has stuck by James Tavernier in his SPFL Team of the Season despite the former Wigan utility man having another nightmare season.

A serious of high-profile errors and disappearing acts have been punctuated through Tav’s season but he still gets the vote of the former St Mirren boss ahead of Jeremie Frimpong.

Knocking in penalties has regularly given Tav ten goals a season but his touch deserted him in the first part of the campaign with three successive failures from the spot.

When Willie Collum pointed to the penalty spot in the League Cup Final Tav quickly handed the ball to the out of touch Alfredo Morelos who watched as Fraser Forster pulled off another impressive save.

In The Sun Rae explains his choice at right-back

RB – James Tavernier: He’s excellent at bombing forward and has phenomenal delivery which has played a part in so many of Rangers’ goals this season.

That comment may have applied in previous seasons but with Daniel Candeias sold in July Tav has been much less effective ‘bombing forward’ with his defending regularly exposed.

Against Hearts in the Scottish Cup the captain was badly short with a headed pass to Allan McGregor that allowed the Jambos to score the only goal of the match through Oliver Bozanic to end Tav’s medal hopes for another season.
